A Geek-informed or Geek-affirmative therapy, aka Geek Therapy, is many things. In the context of psychotherapy it is using comic books, video games, technology, and geek narratives to work with clients. That includes discussing a favorite movie, playing video games, and creating comic books to achieve therapeutic goals.
It was very exciting to see other clinicians on Twitter use #geektherapy and #geekcounseling. I have even seen people use the phrase #geektherapy when referring to making themselves feel better by doing something geeky.
As of today I have taken the Geek Therapy concept further by producing a podcast where Geek Therapy, in all its forms, is front and center. I have had three interviews so far. A few more people have already agreed to come on the show and I have a list of people I am looking forward to reaching out to.
If you have ever used the term Geek Therapy or know of any Geek Therapist, please let me know. I can’t wait to meet more people who are using some form of geek therapy.
